5G network in Kerala is yet to be launched by any network provider. The launch of the 5G network was in the year 2017 by any network in the world. In Kerala, the previous frequency of 4G is also not yet reached many remote areas. As per the latest information, Airtel is the first service provider who had ever tested the 5G network in the state. They had tested the new-gen frequency in their existing 4G network.
Bharti Airtel had accompanied Nokia of Finland and Ericsson of Sweden in September 2020 to the test running of 5G network in the Country. The earlier decision was to depend on Chinese manufacturers Huawei and ZTE who are cheaper options.
The Airtel network is available in almost 100% of areas of Kerala including rural areas and remote parts of city areas.
BSNL 5G Network in Kerala
BSNL has not started the 5G network in Kerala yet. As per the news reports, in September 2020, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) had decided to partner with the Centre for Development of Telematics (CDoT) to test run the 5G network in India. This was also a move to edge out earlier decided Chinese service providers Huawei and ZTE. CDoT is another government-run department in the telecom segment.
A recent update from the Government-owned telecommunication service provider has about increased 4G services. In July 2021, the network provider released the news about 15000 tower up-gradation to a 4G network. This is the 80% tower number of its total available in south India. 4G itself is not a feature for many of the BSNL subscribers.
Reason for Reducing BSNL subscribers
Those who are still holding the BSNL mobile connections are either Urban residents where the service is in a satisfying grade or government employees whose official number is BSNL. Other than these two segments, there are only a few loyal customers who still hold BSNL Mobile connections. The reason is slow up-gradation and below par customer service. Most of the time complaints are not answered and proper solutions are not provided to the user. At the time of porting to another service provider, the BSNL confirmation caller was also not keen to know why the customer wants to leave them nor requests to be with them. Employee negligence is at its highest level due to the Government Employee factor. In this scenario, maintaining the 4G that is the highest available with them itself is a favor to the customers. Keeping fingers crossed for 5G news from BSNL…
Other Networks Available in Kerala
There are 2G,3G, and 4G services by leading networks providers in Kerala. Other than this, 4G+ or LTE service is also there in some parts of the state.
Recently, Airtel had improved its network speed in Kerala due to the high demand for video calls and chat rooms by students and work-from-home employees. The post-pandemic situation had improved network quality substantially in Kerala especially Airtel. The company had a good network of 4G spectrum in the state. The new improvement was in the next level – that is 4G+ or LTE category. This is a 900 MHz spectrum that will improve the network quality of indoor usage significantly. Not only in Urban areas, but the network had also improved a lot in rural areas as well. After LTE, next to hit the state is obviously the 5G network in Kerala.
Jio 5G Network in Kerala
Jio 5G network is the most probable one to happen in Kerala soon other than Airtel. These two are the strongest contenders in the telecom industry in Kerala as well as in India. In May 2021, the Department of Telecom (DoT) gave access and permission of spectrum to make a trial of 5G in the country.
The companies that received the access were Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea. These permissions were to develop and test specific cases suitable for India in different fields by each of them. Not all or ‘interested’ sector to one or all.
